My thoughts on Crime in the city of Flint. Police seem to have no idea as to why crime is on the rise and Flint is topping the charts when it comes to violent crime. My page "crime" is a perfect example of why. Let me run a scenario by you. A thirteen year old kid breaks into a car and steals the stereo. He is not concerned with how long it takes or whether or not he leaves any evidence (what most people would think of as evidence fingerprints.) He continues to break into other cars. He does this for awhile. He even steals from his neighbors. He learns from his neighbors that the police will not even come out and investigate. The most response they get is "can you mail or fax us a list with serial numbers of what was stolen, and descriptions of the items? The punk thinks "this is great I can pretty much get away with this as much as I want. He then gets the bright idea that he can steal the car. He tries this a few times and discovers, that's pretty easy also. Since, when the police finally find the car, stripped down or badly damaged. The most they do, is to write it up, that they found an abandoned car. Besides, now the city gets paid to recover your car and, store it. For which they charge a hefty fee that, the city makes profit on. Of course this is great for the victim. After it has sat in storage a few days the police will finally contact the owner. Now the owner gets his car back and gets to pay the city and the tow company for the car. The city or police make no effort to catch the thief. So now, we get to pay for it in Higher insurance rates for living here ( a whole other topic). So now the juvenile delinquent decides it's time to graduate to breaking into homes. It's been pretty safe so far in his life of crime. Now he begins breaking into homes. He isn't worried at all about evidence. Flint police won't investigate that either. You could have fingerprints embedded into the paint on the window sill from the person who broke into your home. Flint police will just give you their famous dumb look and say "well what do you want me to do about it?" Now, let's take a tally. Car stereos, personal belongings, cars and now houses. The delinquent is getting older and now braver. In one house he finds a gun. Where do you think his mind will go now. He has a pretty easy life so far. Besides, the laws are written to protect him from citizens wanting to defend themselves. He figures, if he gets shot, he will be able to sue. He goes out in the street and fires off a few rounds into the stop sign. Then goes down the street to wait and see what happens. After a half hour or so with no response, he becomes invincible. He doesn't hear any sirens, no police cars come by to investigate. He figures he can now do anything he wants without repercussion or punishment. Now, along the way he did get caught a few times. The Judge gave him community service or probation. He got 100 hours of which he talked a few of his buddies to go with him and he took care of it in two days. "wow" he says to himself. "I can steal steal a few cars and stereos and trade them for some weed or get a few bucks cash." "If I get caught it's just a little time out my day." "besides, now I've got a Rep to maintain." Now let's also look at "PROBATION" have you ever read the Flint Journal when it reports the sentencings? Extended probation for probation violation, double and triple dare probation for violating probation. FOR DOING THE SAME THING!! Yes our judicial system bears some of the blame also. No remorse, No fear of punishment. I mean why should he. He has been conditioned to think that no matter what he does. Even when he gets caught, he still made out like a bandit (pun intended). Do I really need to finish this thought? Or can you picture what happens next.. Violent crime is only the next step in his growth. Some people say we need to get to the root cause. It's poverty, it's because he/she was raised without a father, he/she felt they had no hope for anything better, no jobs, it was drugs, the list goes on. We have people that we pay with our tax dollars to fight crime. The state of Michigan will step in take over the city's finances but refuse to do anything to help with the crime situation. The state will give monies to local governments to catch Hardened Criminals, such as soccer moms in a hurry to get a gallon of milk at Meijers and forgot to Click It so they got a Ticket. Or the state will give you a reward if you turn in someone you know that is stealing cars. www.miheat.org you can earn up to 10,000 dollars for information leading to the arrest. Yes, crime pays well. And we get to pay for it with higher taxes, higher insurance premiums, pay to get our car back out of impound. All with the satisfaction of knowing that the Flint police dept has no intention of doing a damn thing about it. I have a really silly idea. When a house is broken into. Spend about a half hour gathering a few fingerprints. Identify the ones that belong to the owner and put the rest in a database. Then every time someone is arrested. Run them through the database program and see if they match. That person will be your suspect for the crime that was committed. I Know, that would require you to get out of your car. But sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and work through the strain. From what I understand. Flint used to have police officers, that were so good they could match prints without a computer. They actually studied them and were able to file them to go back and find ones with similar characteristics and match them up. It should be a lot simpler now with computers. I know it's just a silly idea. |
